Top Albums of 2009

Friday, December 11th, 2009

So, it’s that time of year again when we look back and reflect upon the year in music. Here at bigtop HQ we’ve not only put together a list of our top 5 albums of the year, but we’re also offering one lucky person the opportunity to win the full set. Rather nice we think. All you need to do to stand a chance of winning all 5 CDs is to watch our video on youtube and tell us the answer to the following question:

Q: How many neatly trimmed bushes does the Volvo estate drive past?

Send us your answer by email or fill in the contact form. On Monday 4th  January, at 5pm, we’ll put all the correct entries into a dustbin and pluck out the winner. Good luck! Closing date for entries is 3pm on 04/01/2010

Grizzly Bear Veckatimest
Chosen by James
I tried to love music in 2009. I really did. But nothing I tried to love gave me any love back. No goosebumps. No sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Perhaps I tried too hard. Out of all the music I tried to love, Grizzly Bear gave me the most satisfaction. It has some nice tunes. That’s about it.

Sunset Rubdown Dragon Slayer
Chosen by Daniel
Sunset Rubdown is on the banned list at bigtop. I’m not allowed to play any music by them, or anything that sounds like them. But don’t let that put you off. I won’t let those bastards win. If David Bowie and Meat Loaf made babies, and they left those babies in a cave to be brought up by wolves, those feral children would make music that sounds like Sunset Rubdown. They make great music for great people like you.

Dark Was the Night Various
Chosen by Amy
A huge tin of Quality Street musical goodness. Thirty-two exclusive tracks, from Andrew Bird to Yo La Tengo, there is something for everyone on this double CD. Pick your favourites. Mine are creams.

Wild Beasts Two Dancers
Chosen by Lauren
XX or Wild Beasts? Wild Beasts or XX? XX or Wild Beasts? Wild Beasts or XX? I love them both. My Dad introduced me to Wild Beasts, although I like to pretend that he didn’t. Thanks Dad! Sing high, sing low. Bit camp. Bit weird. After six listens I guarantee you will like them. Or I’ll give you your money back.

Chosen by everyone at Bigtop
Four miserable youths. Wear black. Make 80s influenced music in a bedroom. We all like this one.
