and the winner is …

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Mickey popped into the office to pick the winner of our Bigtop Albums of the Year 2012 competition.

We had 15 correct answers and they all went into the mug.

The answer was ’1′. That was obviously a typo as Jacko is super-sexy. He’s at least an 11 on the sexiness scale.

Drum roll.

And the winner is …

Grizzly Bear – Shields

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Why not enter our competition, safe in the knowledge that you stand quite a good chance of winning five really good CDs. And you might even win a lucky Bigtop mug. To be perfectly honest, we hardly ever get any entries. Not sure why. Perhaps it’s because nobody shares our music tastes? Perhaps it’s because people just can’t be arsed. So don’t delay, enter today.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how sexy is Jacko?
Hint: Download and play BigtopTrumps.

Send us your answer by email or fill in the contact form. On Monday 7th January, at 2.31pm, we’ll put all the correct entries into an fag packet and pick out the lucky winner.

Grizzly Bear Shields
Chosen by James

I tried really hard to love the last Grizzly Bear album (Veckatimist). I tried really, really hard. So hard that I named it my album of the year in 2009. Then I listened to their new album, Shields. That’s nice, I thought. Nice. I think I like it better than Veckatimist. It’s nice. Then I took my daughter to see them play at the Warwick Arts Centre in October. All of a sudden Shields made sense. All of a sudden Veckatimist made sense. All of a sudden life made sense. It was an amazing evening. Shields is my album of the year.

Poliça Give you the Ghost
Chosen by Amy

Ooh I can’t choose, Poliça – Give you the Ghost or Sharon Van Etton – Tramp, Poliça, Sharon, Poliça, Sharon … Can I have both? No?

Hmmmm. No I can’t decide.

Poliça is a good ‘being in the house and doing stuff album’. Sharon Van Etton is a good ‘being in the house and not doing stuff’ album.

It’s not surprising that I love them both, so does Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and I love Bon Iver too, so there you go.

Sod it, I am in a poppy mood … Poliça it is. Oh, many times have I put Dark Star on the old kitchen Hi-Fi and danced while stirring the tomato soup then fallen grief stricken into polishing the porcelain while Lay Your Cards Out blares out at full volume and I cry into the duster. A touch of Cocteau Twins (I’m showing my age) and a twist of synth. What do they say? An eighties bird never lets go of Electronica? No? Oh well, you know what I mean. A bloody good album, buy it.

Or Sharon, she’s good too.

Oh, wait. What about First Aid Kit? Maybe I should have chosen them instead?

Mac Demarco 2
Chosen by Daniel

22 year old Canadian goofball newcomer Mac DeMarco’s second album this year (thoughtfully titled ’2′ to avoid confusion) blends slacker indie rock elements (think Pavement’s Steve Malkmus sleepy vocal delivery, real estates choral chiming guitars) with funky retro stomp-along beats and bass lines and some pretty cheesy ween-esque guitar licks thrown in for good measure. Part of Mac’s appeal is his contentness… his don’t give a shit attitude and almost total lack of ambition He’s a guy who doesn’t need much to get by, just his girl (Kiki), his Viceroy smokes (to which he dedicates a song) and the same $30 beaten up piece of crap guitar he’ been playing since he was 16. Is it for real? I don’t know, but I like it, it’s refreshing. Even better live too.

Dirty Projectors Swing Lo Magellan
Chosen by everyone at Bigtop

Amy’s wasn’t so sure at first, but after we got her in a headlock and gave her an hour long Chinese burn, she said that she really, really loves it.
