Toms 2011 – The final cut

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

It’s that time of year again, the days are getting longer, sunny days a more regular occurrence and slowly but surely the temperature is beginning to rise. For me this means two things. 1) Time to dust of the fishing rods and get out on the bank, and 2) Time to get out in the garden and get some crops underway. First and foremost it’s greenhouse tomatoes. With such a wide variety on offer, it can be a daunting prospect choosing the right seeds for your own personal taste. Particularly where space is an issue. Last year my favourite variety ‘Cherokee Purple’ A large beefsteak tomato with an impressive flavour like no other I’d tasted,  thrived in the confines of my greenhouse and has inspired my choices this year.

All my seeds this year are from Gary Ibsen’s TomatoFest in California. A wonderful website with a vast and unrivalled amount information and organic heirloom seeds on offer for tomato heads like me. You can search by season, colour, size and growing type (vine or bush). I ordered my seeds last thursday afternoon, they arrived through my letterbox on tuesday morning and  were in the propagator by end of the day. Excellent service, quite impressive! This year I’ve gone for (from top left clockwise…) Azoychka, Black from Tula, Bush Beefsteak, Green Zebra, Brandywine Yellow & Chocolate Stripes. They will be joining Cherokee Purple and will inevitably end up in a salad, sauce or on a pizza later on in the year. Can’t wait!

… catches the worm.

Early start today for James … dropped our girl off at school at 3.45am for a trip to Istanbul, then came straight to the office! He is doing OK for now, but may need matchsticks later. He also has a big pile of worms.

By the way, we are listening to José Feliciano and his bag full of soul. Classy.

Don’t worry, be happy …

Stress is a funny old thing … Daniel is stressed. He has taken to humming tunes from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and eating peanut butter on Mars Bars while working. That’s not actually true but I didn’t know what else to say.

We’re busy, the odd head massage is helping …
